You can enjoy Thanksgiving dinner and still keep your progress. Most people think it's one or the other. Either you eat everything and feel guilty, or you sit there with a small plate and feel left out. Neither one is fun, and neither one is necessary.
At SKfit, our private studio on Fourth Ave in Hillcrest, we coach clients through Thanksgiving every year. The goal is simple. Enjoy the meal, enjoy your family, and be back in the studio on Friday like nothing happened. Here's how we do it.
Why One Meal Won't Undo Your Progress
Let's start with the good news. One big dinner doesn't erase weeks of good training. Your body doesn't work that way.
What actually hurts progress is the week that follows. One meal turns into a long weekend of leftovers. Then a missed workout turns into "I'll start again Monday." Before long, it's January.
So the real win isn't the meal itself. It's what you do the day before and the days after.
How to Enjoy Thanksgiving Dinner Without Overdoing It
These are the same tips we give clients in Hillcrest. Pick two or three and use them this year.
- Don't skip breakfast: Saving up all day usually backfires. Eat a normal breakfast with protein so you don't show up starving.
- Move in the morning: A quick workout, a long walk or a short run sets the tone. It also gives you a reason to make good choices later.
- Fill your plate with protein first: Turkey goes on the plate before anything else. Protein fills you up, so you naturally eat less of the heavy sides.
- Pick your favorites: Skip the dishes you can have any day. Instead, save room for the ones you only get once a year.
- Slow down: Put your fork down between bites and talk. It takes about 20 minutes for your body to feel full.
- Watch the drinks: Drinks add up fast. Alternate with water, and you'll feel a lot better Friday morning.
The After-Dinner Walk
This is the easiest habit on the list, and it works. After the meal, get the family out for a 10 to 20 minute walk around the block.
A short walk after eating helps your body handle the big meal. It also helps digestion and gets everyone off the couch for a bit. Plus, it's great family time. For more on why light movement matters, the American Council on Exercise has some helpful guides.
Get Right Back on Track Friday
Here's where most people slip. Thanksgiving is one day, not a four-day weekend of eating.
- Train Friday: Even a short workout counts. It tells your brain the routine is still on.
- Drink extra water: Salty food and drinks leave you puffy. Water helps you feel normal again faster.
- Make the leftovers lighter: Turkey and veggies are great. Meanwhile, the pie can be a small slice, not a second dinner.
- Skip the scale for a few days: Water weight after a big meal is normal. It usually drops off in a day or two.
